Optical Illusions Floating Wooden Blocks

Look at these wooden blocks. They appear to move, even though they are not. They move around as the camera moves. Produced by us at cool optical illusions.com. If there is enough interest, I could post a printable template so you could make this optical illusion for yourself. But first, I’m curious if you, our loyal visitors, can you figure out how this is done? Post what you think is happening in the comments!

I’ll let this sit a little longer for new people to figure it out, then I plan on publishing the templates so you can make them yourself. Pretty cool. Thanks everyone!

      They are not wooden blocks.

They are pieces of paper that actually fold inward. Their insides are colored to look like wood and our brains make the wrong assumption about their shape.

i know how it’s done. I’ve seen one like this but it was a dragon head. its paper cut and pasted together. It’s actually inverted. the paper goes in instead of out. You brain sees the object come out. Rotating side to side gives the impression of rotation of the the blocks. It’s pretty cool though.

I’m usually good with these and I’m sorry to spoil your fun. For everyone to know the answer you are only required to read the rest. The lightest colored part of both blocks is not the “top” or “square/diamond side” of the blocks. If you stare at the bottom of the lightest color and stare closely, you will see that it’s not poking out, the allusion is that it’s only on the outside because of the 2d helping the effect, and in reality the bottom part of the lightest color is really the farthest part. It’s almost like “the bottom of the bowl”. If you were to put a marble on either one of the blocks, you would see it roll to the bottom part of the “diamond” shaped part and immediately stop. Sadly though once you figure it out the allusion sometimes takes a while to come back. Sorry if I’m not the best at explaining and hope you found this random gibberish entertaining.

The illusion is caused by the fact that the shapes are actually ‘concave’ but your mind tricks you into seeing them them as if they are ‘convex’. They aren’t blocks at all, but more like troughs. Or put another way, the corner that you think is at the front is in fact at the back.
    Great illusion though!

I know. The blocks are not really blocks. They are actually impressed blocks. When you flip them over, your mind thinks that the image is toward you, but it isn’t.
